Resetting an email account password

Changed your mind, lost the password, or had a staff member leave — reset a single mailbox without touching anything else.

Category: EmailDifficulty: EasyTime: ~2 minutesUpdated: Aug 2026

Each mailbox has its own password, separate from your cPanel login and separate again from your client portal. Resetting one mailbox affects only that address.

Every device needs updating. Changing a mailbox password immediately breaks that account on every phone, tablet and computer using it. Do it when you have five minutes to update your devices, not right before a meeting.

Reset it in cPanel

1

Open Email Accounts

Log in to cPanel and click Email Accounts.

2

Find the address and click Manage

Locate the mailbox in the list and click Manage on the right.

cPanel › Email Accounts
sarah@yourbusiness.com.au Manage ›
accounts@yourbusiness.com.au Manage ›
info@yourbusiness.com.au Manage ›
Manage opens the settings for that one mailbox
3

Set a new password

Under Security, enter a new password — or use the generator — then scroll down and click Update Email Settings. The change is immediate.

4

Update your devices

Go through each device using that mailbox and enter the new password. On iPhone: Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts, tap the account, update the password in both the incoming and outgoing (SMTP) sections.

Do not forget SMTP. Updating only the incoming password leaves you able to receive but not send — the single most common follow-up ticket after a password change.

Can't get into cPanel?

If you have lost your cPanel password too, reset that first — see Resetting your cPanel password. If you are locked out of everything, email support@mediafortress.com.au from the address registered on your account and we will verify you and reset it.

When a staff member leaves

Rather than deleting the mailbox immediately:

  • Change the password so they lose access straight away
  • Add a forwarder sending their mail to a manager
  • Optionally set an auto-responder pointing contacts to the right person
  • Delete the mailbox a few months later once nothing important is arriving

Deleting a mailbox destroys everything in it permanently, so this staged approach avoids losing history you may later need.
