Resetting your cPanel password

Locked out of your hosting control panel? Here are the two ways back in, and which one applies to you.

Category: cPanel Basics Difficulty: Easy Time: ~3 minutes Updated: Aug 2026

cPanel is your hosting control panel — files, databases, email accounts and backups. Its password is separate from your client portal login and separate again from any individual mailbox password.

Quick check first: if you are trying to read email, you may not need cPanel at all. Mailbox passwords are reset under Email Accounts, which is a different thing — see Resetting an email password.

Option A: reset it from the client portal

This is the usual route, and it works even when you cannot get into cPanel at all.

1

Log in to the client portal

Go to my.mediafortress.com.au and sign in. If that password is also lost, use the "Forgot Password" link there first.

2

Open your hosting service

Go to Services → My Services and click the hosting plan you want. This is the management screen for that account.

Client portal › My Services
Business Hosting — yourbusiness.com.au Active ›
Domain — yourbusiness.com.au Active ›
Click the hosting service, not the domain
3

Change the password

Look for Change Password in the actions list. Enter a new one, save, and use it at your cPanel login. Use something long — this account controls every file on your website.

Option B: change it inside cPanel

If you can already log in and just want a better password, go to Password & Security in cPanel, enter your current password, then the new one twice.

If neither works

Email support@mediafortress.com.au from the email address registered on the account. We can reset it for you, but for obvious reasons we can only do that for a verified account contact. If your registered address is an old mailbox you can no longer access, tell us and we will verify you another way.

While you are in there: turn on two-factor authentication in the client portal. Hosting accounts are a common target, and 2FA stops the overwhelming majority of attempts cold.
